Gutter Width Printing

The example below shows the appropriate use of gutter for the text along the top left and bottom edges of the design.

Page width for all pages should now be 9 11 inches. Gutter width can take up 1 4 to 1 2 from the page therefore there must be an extra 1 4 1 2 of safety margin space on the side of the page where the gutter spine will be. Content that goes across two pages are known as spreads. If acrobat adds an offset value move that back to 0.

Depending on the size of the book the gutter can be anywhere from 1 4 1 2. In the crop tool increase the page width to 9 11 inches with the center box checked. When laying out pages gutters should not be so narrow that columns run together.

The dotted green line represents gutter. Generally speaking 0 5 inches for your gutter margin is recommended for most books. This is a visual reference to stop you from crowding the finished edge the solid red line with text and any graphics that don t require bleed. Again in the crop tool crop 0 5 inches from left.

Sometimes a rule is used instead of blank space. A gutter margin can smaller for books with less curve and larger for books with more curve.
