A heated circulating water bath sometimes called a circulation heater is used to heat or thaw specimens and a refrigerated circulating bath is used to remove heat from specimens and keep them at a safe temperature.

While a heated circulating bath has the heater and circulator built into the bath a thermal immersion circulator is a mechanism independent of the bath in which it placed. The reservoir in the circulating bath tempers samples along with integral pump that circulates fluid both internally and externally.
